Activity 20

Celebration of the 10th Anniversary of the Establishment of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region

The 10th Anniversary of the Establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region is a memorable moment for both the mainland and Hong Kong. To embrace this date, the Kowloon City District Council joined hand with the Kowloon City District Office to organize a series of celebration activities. Apart from a giant function named 「龍城姿彩慶回歸」held on 30 June 2007, a number of events like district cleansing operations, beautifying roadside electric appliances and promotion activities on national education were rolled out.

(i)    National Education Study Tour to Beijing in Celebration of Hong Kong's Reunification with China

The Kowloon City District Council (KCDC) is dedicated to the development of national education among youngsters.  In celebration of Hong Kong’s reunification with China, the Working Group on District National Education Promotion of the KCDC has organised a “National Education Study Tour to Beijing” to arrange 30 primary and secondary student winners of the National Education Quiz held earlier this year to visit China’s capital, Beijing, for a better understanding of the current situation in our Country and the close bond between the Mainland and Hong Kong.  The four day and three night tour came to a successful close on 15 August.

During the tour, the teachers and students of the study tour visited the Palace Museum, Aviation Museum and Military Museum. They feasted their eyes on the dazzling array of exhibits, many of which were priceless national treasures, on display in the museums and broadened their knowledge of China’s rich culture and recent aviation technology.

In addition to touring the outside of the Olympic stadiums, tour members also visited magnificent historic sites such as the Great Wall and Ming Tombs, which represented the outstanding achievements of China in various times. They felt exhilarated as their wish to “reach the Great Wall and be a true man” was fulfilled and they found the Olympic stadiums a great attraction because of the rich Olympic ambience around them in Beijing. Moreover, they also enjoyed a rickshaw ride to the Hutongs (alleys) and Siheyuans (courtyard houses) that were unique to the northern part of China and experienced for themselves the ancient Beijing culture that was fading away with the development of Mainland China.

One of the major activities on the tour was to attend the flag raising ceremony at Tiananmen Square. Tour members paid their respects as the Five-Starred Red Flag rose slowly to the stately music.  They certainly would better grasp the concept of “country” through the viewing of this solemn ceremony personally in Beijing. During the tour, they were warmly received by the Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office, China Youth Development Foundation and Ministry of Re-Unification and learned a lot from their briefings on the operation of the Chinese government agencies and the current situation in education.

To sum up, the students demonstrated great enthusiasm and vitality throughout the tour. The KCDC believes all tour members have made a fulfilling and meaningful tour of Beijing and hopes that they will better understand our Country, deepen their love for it and, more importantly, share their tour experience with others in the community.

“Getting to Know Our Country – the People’s Republic of China” Civic Education Package

To give the general public, particularly the young generation, a better insight into our Country and foster their love for it and a sense of identity, the Kowloon City District Council (KCDC) has compiled a civic education package entitled “Getting to Know Our Country – the People’s Republic of China”. It is hoped that the package will enable schools and local organisations in the district to promote civic education in a systematic way, so as to help patriotic Hong Kong people gain a better understanding of our Country.

The package consists of a handbook and an interactive CD-ROM. The handbook, covering a wide variety of subjects, will enable readers to have a thorough grasp of our Country. To add more fun to the package, we have incorporated a number of website links in the CD-ROM and used a multi-media interface to let viewers participate actively in an interactive learning environment.

The KCDC announced the publication of the civic education package at the Kowloon City District Festival 2005 - Kick-off Ceremony for the Promotion of Civic Education held on 10 July 2005 at the Soccer Pitch of the Carpenter Road Park, Kowloon City. Copies of the package have been distributed to all public and university libraries across the territory. Primary and secondary schools, local organisations, non-governmental organisations, owners’ corporations, and mutual aid committees etc. in the district have also received free copies.

Please also visit our National Education Website at http://www.modernchina.info to learn more about this civic education package.

Activity 23
Cultural Heritage of Kowloon City District

Cultural Heritage of Kowloon City District, a book which aims to give the public a better understanding of the Kowloon City District, has been published by the Kowloon City District Council (KCDC) this month. The book comprises four parts, namely the history of the district, its scenic and historic spots, local traditions and customs, and folk poetry.

To ensure good quality, the KCDC has commissioned the Department of Chinese of the University of Hong Kong to compile the book. It is the fruit of a whole year’s laborious research and compilation work. In addition to original historical information and precious photographs gleaned from local and overseas sources, the book also contains exclusive oral historical accounts by local leaders in the district. The book is, indeed, a treasure in itself.

Copies of the book will be distributed to all public and university libraries across the territory. Primary and secondary schools, local organisations, non-governmental organisations, owners’ corporations, and mutual aid committees etc. in the district will also receive free copies.
