Welcome Message By the Chairman of the North District Council Welcome to the home page of the North District Council. Situated at the northernmost part of Hong Kong and separated from Shenzhen by a river, the North District has been an important link between Hong Kong and China. The reunification along with the implementation of CEPA and “individual visit” scheme further boost the volume of the busy traffic between the two places. Serving as a bridge linking Hong Kong and China, the North District is developing rapidly. With an area of 168 square kilometers, the North District is one of the largest administrative districts in the New Territories. Geographically, the North District consists of Sheung Shui, Fanling, Ta Kwu Ling and Sha Tau Kok. The Lo Wu, Man Kam To and Sha Tau Kok control points in the district are gateways to the Mainland, playing indispensable role in promoting the development of both Hong Kong and Mainland China. Formed in 1982, the North District Council commits itself to assisting the Government in district administration. The Council also makes use of the funds allocated by the Government to subsidize local organizations in holding a wide range of district activities, benefiting residents of all age groups. The North District Council also carries out environmental improvement projects to meet the needs of local residents including river regulation, repair and construction of bridges and roads, etc. The Chief Executive
announced in the Policy Address that District Councils would be
tasked with managing some district facilities. Thus, apart from the
four committees devoted to the deliberation and handling of issues
related to traffic and transport affairs, community building,
cultural and recreational affairs, social services, labour and
economic affairs as well as district minor works and environmental
improvement affairs, a District Facilities Management Committee has
also been formed under the new North District Council, enabling the
Council to actively involve in the management of district facilities
such as libraries, community halls, leisure grounds, sports venues
and swimming pools. It is our goal to team up with all stakeholders
in the district in creating a better and more harmonious living
environment for the North District residents.
