A Profile of the Southern District Council &
its Committees
The Southern District Council
To discuss issues affecting the
district and the territory, forming an important channel of
Government consultation process, and when necessary, to hold
special meetings or set up ad hoc groups to address particular
matters. Government's departmental representatives will often be
invited to attend district council meetings to explain its
policies and to provide information for discussion and to listen
to members' opinions on various issues.
The Southern
District Council has set up 4 committees and a brief
description of their terms of reference is as follows:
Community Building, Culture, Leisure and Tourism Committee
to advise the Government on the effectiveness of the community development
projects, community participation programmes, cultural,
leisure and tourism affairs pertaining to the district. It is
also dedicated to the promotion of community spirit and sense
of belonging of the residents in the district.

Environment and Hygiene Committee
to advise the Government on matters relating to environmental, hygiene and health
issues in the district. It also use the Southern District
Council funds to implement the minor environmental improvement
projects in the district.

Traffic
and Transport Committee
to concern itself with the traffic and transport planning affecting the
district and constantly monitor the operation and quality of
the public transport services with a view to advising the
Government on further improvement to the traffic situation in
the district.

Planning,
Works and Housing Committee
to concern itself with the progress of the planning, capital works & housing
affairs in the district and
monitor the implementation of these works with a view to
reducing the impacts on the residents during the works stage.

At present, the
Southern District Council is formed by 21 members, including 17
elected and 4appointed ones. Their tenure of office runs for 4
years from 1.1.2004 to 31.12.2007. The members list of the
