Special Features of Southern District

(A) The District Profile

(1)

The Southern District covers an area of about 4,000 hectares, larger than any of the 3 other districts on Hong Kong Island;

 

(2)

Pok Fu Lam Village near Chi Fu Fa Yuen is one of the oldest villages on Hong Kong Island and according to the villagers, its history can be traced back to more than 200 years ago;

 

(3)

Alongside the shore of Telegraph Bay in Pok Fu Lam, i.e. the location of the Cyberport, is the place where Bauhinia was first discovered. There is a Bauhinia garden inside the Cyberport to commemorate the event;

The Southern District has more famous bathing beaches than the other 3 districts on the Island;

The reputed restaurant extensively renowned for its delicious 'fish balls' and noodle is located in the Southern District;

There are many rehabilitation facilities in the district and they tend to concentrate in Sha Wan Drive, Wong Chuk Hang and Chung Hom Kok, including 5 special schools, 9 child care hospitals, rehabilitation hospitals, nursing homes and infirmaries;

Cyberport -- Hong Kong's IT Flagship which covers an area of about 24hectares, is situated in Telegraph Bay, Pokfulam;

The district has a wide variety of schools, namely primary schools (24), secondary schools (17), prevocational schools (2), Chinese cookery institution (1), special schools (3) and international schools (3).

There are 9 public housing estates in the district, accommodating about 113,000 people.

 

 

(B) Area and Population of the Southern District

The Southern District is located in the southern part of Hong Kong Island with Big Wave Bay to the east, Pok Fu Lam to the west. It faces the Pacific Ocean and, with an area of about 4000 hectares, covers nearly half of the Island's area in which Shek O, Tai Tam, Stanley, Chung Hom Kok, Repulse Bay, Wong Chuk Hang, Aberdeen and Ap Lei Chau are all included. The district has a population of 290,000.

(C) Spots of Interest for the Visitors

The Aberdeen Typhoon Shelter
Aberdeen was a traditional fishing village and the Aberdeen Typhoon Shelter has all along been a refuge for the local fishing vessels. It is the place where the tourists can have fun taking a ride on a sampan to cruise around the fishing port.

The Jumbo Floating Restaurant
The well-known floating restaurants anchored in Sham Wan form an attractive feature in the Southern District. Tourists could taste the freshness and deliciousness of sea food besides enjoying the picturesque scene at sunset when the sea reflects the glamorous decorative lights embellishing those vessels. Ocean Park
The Ocean Park of Hong Kong, with its size of 87 hectares, is the largest recreation and entertainment resort in the South-East Asia. Stretching from Nam Long Shan to Wong Chuk Hang area, it embraces an exciting array of thrill rides, the world-class Atoll Reef and the Ocean Theatre, the Bird Paradise, Butterfly House, and Wave Cove. Besides, the Middle Kingdom and the newly-built Panda Garden inside the park are irresistible attractions for tourists. Stanley and its markets
Ever since Qing Dynasty, Stanley has developed from a little fishing village into a place accommodating both the Chinese and the Western people. Nowadays, Stanley has still preserved the traditional colour of its small fishing village on the one hand and the strong European passion on the other. Apart from beautiful beaches, the open markets and European-style bars and restaurants around Stanley New Street and Stanley Market Road are also tourist attractions in the locality.

Stanley Plaza and Murray House
The Stanley Plaza is designed with the intention to maintain rural concept and harmony with the surrounding Ma Hang Estate Development. It comprises a large shopping centre, the nostalgic European style Murray House and the Village Square adjoining the seafront promenade. Murray House, in particular, was one of the oldest buildings in Hong Kong, originally built in the Central and Western District and dismantled in 1982 when its bricks were removed piece by piece for later reconstruction in Stanley. The rebuilt Murray House, opened in November 2000.  On the ground floor of Murray House, the Hong Kong Maritime Museum shows how China, Asia and the West have contributed through the ages to the development of boats, ships, maritime exploration and trade, and naval warfare.  More details of the museum are available at the following web pages: (www.hkmaritimemuseum.org/aboutus_chi.php).

Old Stanley Police Station
At the other end of Stanley Main Street stands the Old Stanley Police Station. It was built in 1859 and renovated in 1993 when its external appearance was preserved with its interior converted into a supermarket. It was one of the six earliest police stations in Hong Kong and has become the oldest building of the Police Force as well as one of the oldest English style buildings in Hong Kong.

Hong Kong Correctional Services Museum

The HK Correctional Services Museum located at 45 Tung Tau Wan Road, Stanley (next to the parade ground of the Staff Training Institute in Stanley), has opened since early 2003. The Museum displays artefacts and documents related to the Correctional Services with a collection of some 600 artefacts. It now becomes the one of the main attraction for visitors. Beaches Repulse Bay
The Southern District has the most beautiful beaches in Hong Kong. Among them, Repulse Bay beach is the most renowned. On one side of the beach, there stands two statues measured more than ten metres high, namely the Tin Hau and the Kwun Yum. Deep Water Bay, another famous beach not far away from Repulse Bay, and Middle Bay and South Bay in the vicinity are also havens for beach-goers. The beaches at Shek O and Big Wave Bay have fine sand and clear water, making them not only the beach-lovers' paradise but also the rendezvous of the wave surfers.

Country Park Tai Tam Country Park
In the Southern District on Hong Kong Island, there are a total of four country parks, namely the Pok Fu Lam Country Park, the Aberdeen Country Park, the Tai Tam Country Park and the Shek O Country Park. Inside these parks, there are barbecue and picnicking sites, visitor centres for information on ecological habitats and animal specimen exhibitions, nature trails and hiking trails.
